Sabrina gulped. John looked back at her in the mirror. “You know what you’re doing?”

She looked over at me, her eyes pleading for help. I could tell John was mostly playing, trying to intimidate her.

“I thought you were supposed to be a fighter,” he said.

Sabrina winced. “I am.”

John began to smirk. He stared back at her in the mirror and chuckled when she took another calming breath.

Sabrina started up the clippers again.

“Ouch!” he said and pretended to jump. Sabrina’s hands shot back. John started to laugh.

Sabrina looked at me again for help. “Is this normal?”

“No,” I laughed. “I think the cook finally made him something he liked.”

“Thanks for the recipe advice,” he said to Sabrina through the mirror.

“Anytime, sir.”

“Claire’s been putting up with it. Guess she doesn’t want to eat lunch out by the road.”

“I don’t mind it at all,” I said.

Sabrina held up her fist. “Solidarity.”

John shook his head and sat up straight. “Okay, let’s cut this mop.”

Sabrina started up the clippers again. “Can I write Mr. B on the back of your head?”

John stared back at her. “I assume that’s a joke.”

“We could send a picture to Camille,” I suggested. “It would make her day.”

“I could clean it up after. You won’t even notice it was there,” Sabrina added. She was joking but John had started it.

The scowl on his face was priceless as he looked back and forth between us but it seemed like he was actually considering it.

“Why not?” he said finally. “Do the top like so.” He smoothed his hair to one side. “Tighter, but like this.”

Sabrina was thrilled. “This is going to be so great.”

“Get the camera ready,” John said and winked at me.

We’d been sending Camille pictures as a daily progress report. Now that John was able to walk around a little, he wandered well beyond the stone path outside his room. The photos had become his progress report, something he could look back on to see for himself that his vitality was improving. Camille loved getting them since she wasn’t often able to be there.

The clippers buzzed away and tufts of John’s gray hair began to fall to his shoulders.

“How does it look?” he asked me only a few minutes in.

“It’s coming along,” I said.

He looked impatient but in a good way. I could suddenly imagine him as a five-year-old having to sit on his hands. The whole silly idea had brought a glimmer to his eye.

“Hang tight there, B-Diddy,” Sabrina said.

John held up his finger. “No one else sees this.”

“Not even Mina? She might appreciate it.” I was only kidding.

John shook his head.

“Hold still, B-boy,” Sabrina said.

John shot her a pretend glare. “How does it look?” he asked again.

“Like the back of a head right now. I’m still trimming you.”

“How long is it going to take?”

Sabrina turned off the clippers and smiled back at him. “This thing has two speeds; fast and accurate. Which one would you prefer?”

“Alright, alright. Point taken,” he said.

He sat still while Sabrina worked and I watched. “That looks good,” I said after a few more minutes.
